New Delhi, India – January 27, 2026 — India and the European Union (EU) have successfully concluded negotiations on a long-awaited and historic free trade agreement (FTA), Indian officials and European leaders announced on Monday, marking a major milestone in bilateral economic relations. The deal, expected to be formally unveiled later this week at the India-EU Summit, comes at a time of evolving global trade dynamics and strained ties between India and the United States.

India and EU Conclude Historic Trade Deal Talks Amid Strained US Relations

The agreement is the culmination of nearly two decades of intermittent negotiations, which first began in 2007 and gained renewed momentum in 2022. Both sides described the agreement as transformative, promising to significantly deepen trade and investment flows between India and the 27-member EU bloc, a collective economy representing roughly one-quarter of global GDP and around 2 billion consumers.

India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said the negotiations have now wrapped up and the pact will be formally announced shortly. Before coming into effect, the agreement will undergo a standard legal review process, with formal signing expected later this year and implementation likely in 2027.

A Strategic Pivot in Global Trade

The deal includes mutually agreed tariff reductions on key products, which are expected to open up new market opportunities for exporters and investors on both sides. Although sensitive sectors such as agriculture and dairy have been excluded to protect domestic producers, the agreement is widely seen as a major boost for labour-intensive and industrial exports.

The conclusion of talks coincides with growing tensions between India and the United States, where trade disputes and high tariffs have strained relations and prompted New Delhi to diversify its economic partnerships. The Trump administration’s higher tariff regime on Indian goods has been cited by analysts as a motivating factor behind India’s push to accelerate trade engagement with the EU and other partners.

Beyond Trade: Strategic and Security Cooperation

In addition to economic cooperation, India and the EU are exploring deeper strategic and defence collaboration. Draft documents suggest plans for annual dialogues on security issues, while EU leaders have underscored the importance of aligning efforts in areas such as cybersecurity, maritime security, and counter-terrorism.

The announcement is set to be a highlight of the India-EU Summit in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host senior EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The summit is expected to also discuss enhanced mobility frameworks and broader cooperation across technology, climate action, and people-to-people exchanges.

A New Era in India-EU Relations

With bilateral trade already exceeding $136 billion in the last fiscal year, the successful conclusion of the FTA negotiations is poised to elevate India-EU economic engagement to new heights. Leaders from both sides have called the agreement a “new chapter” in their partnership — one that could redefine global trade alliances in the years to come.
